Naomi Osaka and the Changing Power Dynamics in Sports

I've never been a massive sports fan. I've always enjoyed playing various sports, but have never been an astute follower of a particular league or competition. I have however been following Naomi Osaka's journey closely, as I strongly believe she is a catalyst for change in the sporting world.

Professional athletes have always been treated as demi-gods, and for good reason - they represent the peak of human performance and provide us with entertainment in new and exciting ways. But as much as we push them to new heights through celebration and praise, I've always believed that fans, critics and commentators will simultaneously push them to new lows when their performance doesn't meet their expectations.

Naomi's refusal to take part in media proceedings to protect her mental health has served as not only a reminder that athletes are human and suffer from the same lows that we do, but also that athletes are ultimately the ones with the power. Support from other stars such as Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving signal a turning point in sport, one that I think will ultimately lead to happier and healthier athletes.
