Asian Undergrounds making a 21st Century

One of the best things I've seen all year is Yung Singh's curated event for Boiler Room this month. A complete South Asian line up from the Daytimers collective featuring artists mixing house, UK garage and jungle with South Asian influences made for some absolute HEAT.

I was also delighted to learn that the name of the Daytimers collective was in reference to a movement in the UK during the 80s and 90s where British Asians would attend massive club events that were held during the day as they were forbidden from attending sweaty nightclubs by their parents. Day raves became an outlet for Young Asians to party as they could get their groove on and be home for dinner by 6pm.

I am so excited by this movement as the emergence of Asian artists in the dance music scene opens up a realm of creative possibilities through the artist's ability to incorporate their cultural identity in a medium that can be enjoyed by the masses. In the words of Yung Singh himself, long live the new Asian underground.
